What’s healthier …smoothies and fruit juice or a piece of fruit?
With so much information out there about sugar/juicing/fibre/vitamins etc it is all getting a bit confusing.
A glass of smoothie will provide you with 2-3 of your ‘5 a day’ and is a quick and easy way of getting some vitamins too. Although a glass of fruit juice will only provide 1 of your ‘5 a day’ it too is a quick and easy fix.
However, the problem with both of these, is that they contain a lot of sugar. Yes fruit also contains sugar but not as much and it affects your body in a different way.
A whole piece of fruit is a much better option than a smoothie or a glass of fruit juice as the sugar inside it is contained within cells. This means that when it gets into your stomach, your body has to break down those cells to access the sugar. This takes time, and so actually the amount of sugar going into your system does so over a longer period of time rather than in juice or smoothies where it is absorbed in one big hit.
This is especially relevant with smoothies, whereby you are actually having 2-3 pieces of fruit. Which means 2-3 times the amount of sugar, with no plant cells to slow it being absorbed into your body. Also, very few of us would have 2-3 portions of whole fruit in one go, so its actually quite a high calorie snack (around 200-300 calories).
So, save your money, body and heath by swopping your juice/smoothie to a whole piece of fruit or a portion of vegetables.
