Every day I have at least 1 client asking me how many calories they should be having and it is something I am very reluctant to tell them. Why? Because aiming for an exact amount of calories does not result in weight loss….and it hasn’t done so far so there is no reason to argue.
For starters, the exact amount of calories you need is unknown without taking lots of tests. This is because the amount of calories you burn is affected by so many things it is impossible to account for every scenario. Dietitians, actually work off a rough starting figure based on calculations and then adjust it depending on how their client’s body reacts. They then base their advice around these figures and ensuring your get all the nutrients you need (not just the calories).
If you, yourself start to aim for a certain amount of calories then often what happens is you have too many or too few (both of which can lead to weight gain), end up hungry, give up because reading all labels is a real bore, you won’t enjoy your meals, you never have any treats (you are allowed to!) or have unbalanced meals just to be within your ‘target’ calorie intake.
In actual fact, if you follow the advice given to you by your dietitian then on some days you will be slightly over and on other days you will be slightly under your calorie needs – overall though you will be in a calorie deficit and lose weight. Not only this, but you start to understand food and balanced meals, without reading the back of everything.
Instead of calories, learn about the different food groups- fruits and vegetables, starchy foods, proteins and fats. Learn also about portion sizes and make sure you get foods from all of the groups in your diet. This, I guarantee you will get you losing weight and keep it off forever —> without ever being on a ‘diet.’
