Many of my clients will often report choosing vegan cakes, biscuits and drinks as a healthier alternative. Vegan means without any animal products – not even honey or dairy. People choose to follow a vegan diet for various reasons such as the ethical, environmental and health benefits. However, in recent years this diet has been sexed up in the media which seems to have confused many people into thinking that anything labelled vegan is automatically healthy.
Yes of course not being able to grab a bar of dairy milk chocolate and having all your meals based on vegetables is going to mean that you have to avoid a lot of junk and processed food. But, there are still vegan foods which aren’t healthy.
The term ‘healthy’ implies something is good for your health, but there are still foods classed as vegan such as salt, coconut oil and maple syrup which are in fact bad for you. Unfortunately, some vegan products are in no way any better for you than the normal alternative.
So, the bottom line is – have which ever products suit you and your needs but just bear in mind that one isn’t any healthier than the other.
