Regular cereal bars contain several high FODMAP ingredients such as honey, cashew nuts and prunes. As many of us rely on cereal bars as an easy go-to snack, we are left looking for a suitable alternative.
This is a review of TrueSelf Foods cereal bars. It is an independent and honest review and I have not been paid to do this. It is also not an endorsement of the product.
Who is TrueSelf?
TrueSelf, is a US based company founded by a doctor to produce specialist low FODMAP cereal bars. They ship these bars all around the world so are easy to get hold of even in the UK.
What Makes Them Low FODMAP?
These bars have been created to contain none of the usual problematic ingredients described above. They have also been given the seal of approval by FODMAP Friendly which means that the product is part of a certification programme which ensures that it is made to low FODMAP standards.
What Are The Products?
The low FODMAP cereal bars come in 4 flavours – Blueberry, Lemon Poppy, Pumpkin Spice and Banana Cinnamon.
Blueberry – sugar: 10g (medium), 3g protein and 150 calories.
Lemon Poppy – sugar: 9g (medium), 4g protein, 150 calories.
Pumpkin Spice – sugar: 9g (medium), 4g protein, 150 calories.
Banana cinnamon – sugar: 10g (medium), 3g protein, 150 calories.
What Do They Taste Like?
All the bars are fairly sweet in taste, but nothing above what you would expect in a typical cereal bar. Their texture is easy to chew, unlike other bars on the market and each flavour is really quite different. My personal favourite in the Pumpkin Spice.
I also personally liked the fact that these bars are quite big for just 150 calories as cereals bars are usually a lot smaller so you don’t feel like you get much for your calories.
How Much Do They Cost?
The bars are shipped from the US, but the price includes the shipping costs. You can’t buy the bars individually but they work out as being around £2.00 each when you buy a box. This is a pretty reasonable price when compared to other similar products such a specialist protein bars.
What Else Could You Buy Instead?
As a dietitian, I do not represent brands and so in a review I will give you alternative options to compare with and then make your own choice. These are the alternatives I found which would be suitable on the low FODMAP diet.
